Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema

WHAT I DO

MANAGING LYMPHOEDEMA

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition, therefore self management is key. Some people develop lymphoedema gradually over time, and some people develop oedema after an injury, radiation or surgery.

Therapy usually consists of an Intensive Phase, to reduce the size of the limb, followed by the Maintenance Phase, to maintain the size of the limb.

Every treatment is individualised and has many components.

There are so many new advancements in lymphoedema management, and being a part of an international training institution, LTA, allows me to be at the forefront of new techniques and technologies.

Lymphatic Mapping is now available in South Africa! Contact Candice to discuss if you would benefit from Mapping.

WHAT IS

FLUOROSCOPY GUIDED MLD (FG-MLD)?

This pioneering technique has been developed by Prof J P Belgrado (University of Brussels) following the imaging of over 1500 lymphatic systems. This has allowed identifying for the first time the usual lymphatic pathways used following a pathology.  Fluoroscopy also provides real-time images of the lymphatics allowing for us to see how to use our hands to move fluid better and ensure that we are carrying out an effective technique.

It is from the feedback of fluoroscopy that Prof. Belgrado has developed the new and researched based technique known as ‘Fill and Flush’.

The technique builds on existing knowledge but is devised with the most recent finding of anatomy, pathology and physiology.

Since October 2014 LTA has trained over 700 therapists in FG-MLD, the feedback has been amazing with therapists seeing faster outcomes and shorter treatment times.- http://www.lymph.org.uk/

Candice has been using the FG MLD technique for over 4 years now, and is also trained in the more classic Leduc Technique.
